Reflections on the theme “Survival is Insufficient” from Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel, about the importance of beauty, art, and joy.
I’m grieving the loss of a body I can trust and struggling with what it means for the future. Should I have kids? With chronic pain and fatigue, am I capable of being a present, caring mother, who gives them the attention they deserve?
I am awed and terrified by the power of this grief, and of grief in general. Everyone’s experiences with grief are different and change with time, but as I have processed this grief of my friend’s untimely death, I have started to recognize more forms of grief throughout my life.
I am a physicist sharing my journey with chronic conditions such as HSD/hEDS and MCAS.
